elevator; to eat more fresh foods and less commercially prepared food;
or perhaps play their favourite sport instead of just watching it on
TV. In essence, pharmaceuticals can help and assist in quitting
smoking but they cannot motivate you to get active.
Further, 2 in 5 Ontarians are inactive – if those unfit became fit,
the reduction in the rate of premature death would be more profound
than if the smokers quit smoking. If 1 in 5 of those inactive became
active, as much as $1.1 billion in costs associated with health care,
lost revenues, etc. could be avoided. However, if 1 in 5 cigarette
smokers quit smoking, only $0.4 billion in associated costs could be
avoided, less than half. - Benefits of Physical
Activity for Ontario, Prepared for Ministry of Culture, Tourism and
Recreation and Ministry of Health, 1995.
Sedentary living or inactivity is the most
prevalent of the four primary risk factors for coronary heart disease;
inactivity, however, is an easily modifiable risk factor. For
optimal health benefits, Canadian adults need 30-60 minutes of
physical activity every day. According to Canada's Physical Activity
Guide to Healthy Active Living (published in 1998 by Health Canada and
the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology), Adults can add up their
activities over the course of the day of at least 10 minutes each.
There should be a mix of
endurance activities,
flexibility activities, and
strength activities.
In addition, Canada's Physical Activity Guide to Healthy Active
Living -- lists the health risks of inactivity as premature death,
heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, adult-onset diabetes,
osteoporosis, stroke, depression, and colon cancer. As well,
health-care professionals point out that physical activity helps to
maintain quality of life as people age. The best anti-aging
prescription is regular physical activity.

Over 2.0 million persons celebrated their 65th
birthday in 2000 (5,574 per day). In the same year, about 1.8
million persons 65 or older died, resulting in an annual net
increase of approximately 238,000 (650 per day). - American

In 2011, the "Baby Boom" generation will begin
to turn 65, and by 2030, it is projected that one in five people
(American statistics) will be age 65 or older. The size of the
older population is projected to double over the next 30 years.
Have you ever thought there are a lot of older people driving,
vacationing, golfing, waiting in the hallways of Hospitals for a
room, or generally "out in the public" - imagine what those
places will look like in 15 years. Imagine when 1 in 7 people
(Canadian) is older than 60 and on the road, at the golf course,
or at the store / restaurant. |
